Types of Roles We Place
Helping San Francisco Bay Area
Families Find The Right Childcare
At Genuine Nannies, we have 20+ years specializing in placing experienced, professional caregivers and household staff throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. From newborn care specialists to ROTA nannies to family assistants, we help you make a confident, informed decision about what you need.
Choosing the right childcare professional isn’t just about availability, it’s about alignment. Every family has a different rhythm, schedule, and level of support they need. Some need hands-on childcare around the clock. Others need structure, logistics, or operational leadership behind the scenes.
Understanding the type of nanny or household professional your family needs is the first step toward a successful long-term placement.
We can help you find the perfect fit for your family:
Full-time nanny, part-time nanny, newborn care specialist, live-in/out, temporary nanny, house managers, family assistant
-
Best for: Families who want professional childcare.
Nannies commute to and from the home and work defined hours. This is one of the most common nanny arrangements in the Bay Area.
Nannies are ideal when:
Schedules are predictable
Families want clear separation between work and personal space
Childcare is the primary focus
-
Best for: Families with long hours, frequent travel, or a need for 24/7 coverage
ROTA nannies work on a rotating schedule (commonly seven days on/seven days off or five on/five off) providing consistent, high-level care while maintaining sustainability for the caregiver.
ROTA care is ideal for families who need:
Continuous coverage
Consistency for children
Built-in rest cycles for caregivers
-
Best for: Families with newborns who want expert, short-term support
Newborn Care Specialists are trained professionals who support families during the early postpartum period. This role is typically short-term and focused on infant care, sleep shaping, and parental education.
Often hired for:
Overnight care
Postpartum recovery
First-time parents seeking guidance
-
Best for: Families who want built-in availability and convenience
Live-in nannies reside in the family’s home and typically work a set schedule. While housing is provided, the role still requires clear boundaries, guaranteed hours, and time off.
Live-in arrangements can be especially helpful for:
Early mornings or late evenings
Families with demanding schedules
Homes with space for private accommodations
-
Best for: Families who travel frequently or seasonally.
Travel nannies support families on trips (domestic or international) providing continuity of care while away from home.
Travel arrangements should clearly define:
Compensation and overtime
Travel days and rest time
Accommodations and boundaries
-
Best for: Families needing overnight support without full newborn specialization. Night nannies focus on overnight infant care so parents can rest. While similar to NCS roles, night nannies may not provide formal newborn education or sleep training.
-
Best for: Families who need both childcare and household support
A Family Assistant is a hybrid role that blends childcare with household organization and logistics. This role supports the flow of family life, especially when children are in school part of the day.
Responsibilities may include:
Childcare before or after school
School and activity coordination
Family errands and scheduling
Light household organization
-
Best for: Homes with multiple staff, complex schedules, or operational needs
A Household Manager oversees the systems, staff, and logistics of a home. This role functions more like a general manager than a hands-on caregiver.
Household Managers often:
Manage household staff and vendors
Oversee schedules, travel, and logistics
Create systems and operational structure
Serve as the central point of communication

Our team of nanny placement specialists personally interview and vet every candidate. Many of our nannies are found through referral or direct recruiting. We also have nannies that come to us because of our established reputation for integrity and professionalism.
We always recruit on an individual basis so that we can find a nanny with the right combination of availability, experience, skills and personality characteristics to match with the specific needs of your family. Our goal is to not only match on job specifications but also to find a good personality fit for everyone involved. We do not pull from a database of nanny profiles except for temporary candidates. This ensures we always have up-to-date information on certifications and background checks and that we are working with nannies who are actively looking for employment.
-
Our first requirement is that the nanny possess a genuine interest in working with children. The nannies you meet though us will have completed a comprehensive profile as well as a detailed phone and in-person interviews. We speak to each reference at length and write up a detailed summary.
In addition to verifying recent work experience and CPR certification, we arrange to have every hired candidate’s fingerprints registered though Trustline, California’s background check for in-home childcare providers. All background checks include DMV records, social security verification and a criminal record check for the nanny’s primary country of residence. -
Bay Area Full-time and part-time nannies who live-out typically earn between $35-$45 gross per/hr.($25-$35 gross in Southern California). Live-in nannies typically earn a slightly lower rate with flexibility depending on the arrangement.
We can help advise you on compensation and benefits. For a full-time nanny, typical benefits include paid vacation, sick pay, holiday pay and guaranteed hours. Hourly rates are generally based on the nanny’s prior experience and payrate, qualifications, training and education, specific job duties and expectations around childcare and the household.
-
There is an initial non-refundable $400 registration fee which is due after our initial consultation if you would like to move forward with the search. This is deducted from the overall referral fee which is due when you hire a nanny that we have recommended to you. Referral fees vary depending on the type of hire; full-time, part-time, live-in etc.
-
Every situation is different and we can accommodate last minute requests but because we go to such great lengths to find you the perfect fit for your family, we recommend allowing 2-6 weeks to complete the process depending on the details of your search. We can also help you with a temporary nanny if you are in a bind to help give you the time needed to find the right nanny for the long-term.
