GENUINE NANNY: NINA P.

Part - Time - San Francisco

MEET OUR RELIABLE, UNDERSTANDING AND FUN GENUINE NANNY NINA!

I've had an affinity and special gift for connecting to children all my life. My sister calls me the Kid Whisperer :) Even long into my teen years, I could be found at the kids' table at every family gathering. I started babysitting for friends and family at the age of 10, and at 13 I started babysitting the little girl, whom, together with her younger sister, when she came along, I'd end up caring for their entire childhoods, only stopping because they outgrew the necessity. Both of those girls are now in their 40's, with children of their own, whom I also care for now and again. When I left that position, I returned to school to become a teacher. I graduated from San Francisco State University summa cum laude with a Bachelor"s degree in Early Childhood Education. In 2006, I started working at my current job, as a preschool teacher, working with 3 and 4 year olds. It's a child-centered, art-based preschool, where we provide an emergent curriculum based on the Reggio Emilia approach, to consider the whole child and to provide the children with a safe, nurturing environment, where they can explore and work at their own pace. This philosophy aligned with my own because, as an artist myself, I understand the most effective and lasting learning experiences are those made by having the opportunity to explore, discover and create freely and the flexibility to make mistakes and adjustments.

MY BELIEFS AS A GENUINE NANNY

I believe...That children have an innate love of learning, and that knowledge and development happen naturally through play

I believe...That within safe, nurturing relationships with the adults in their lives, children learn to master new skills, navigate friendships and regulate their emotions spontaneously every day.

I believe...When children are provided with gentle guidance and clear boundaries, they thrive best and are able to meet new challenges with confidence and excitement.

PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY, STRENGTHS,
WORK ETHIC, AND VALUES:

I bring humor and fun into my classroom, but also know how to lay down the law and keep things running smoothly and orderly. I've always developed special bonds with each of the children in my care (and their parents). I am a huge advocate for the safety and well-being of the children in my care and, with my experience and credentials, I am able to understand the needs of a child, sometimes before they become obvious. I have a strong work ethic and have been known to go above and beyond the duties required of me.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE A NANNY?

I'm 58 this year and while I've absolutely loved working in the classroom all these years, I'm feeling a strong pull to go back into the private sector, where I can work more closely and individually with a single family. I would also enjoy more flexibility to pursue my art in a way I've not been able to so far.

WHAT IS YOUR COMMUNICATION STYLE WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR EMPLOYERS? ANY EXAMPLES TO SHARE?

I have a direct, but considered communication style with my employer. I believe it's essential to be honest and open, while remaining appropriate and professional.

WHAT TYPE OF NANNY ROLE ARE YOU LOOKING FOR AND WHAT ENVIRONMENT YOU WOULD BE MOST SUCCESSFUL IN

I would like to find a place within a family where I am considered more a dear friend or part of the family than just the 'paid help.' I feel strongly that the right family is out there waiting to meet me and that when the time is right, we will know each other.

PLEASE DESCRIBE HOW YOU HAVE TAKEN INITIATIVE AS A NANNY OR WHILE WORKING WITH A FAMILY?

I have always been a self-starter, and I don't wait to be directed to do something that I know needs doing. If, for example, one of the children in my care wasn't feeling well, I knew to keep them home from school, rather than waiting to get that specific instruction from a parent.

WHAT ARE YOUR DISCIPLINE PHILOSOPHY AND CHILD-REARING VALUES?

I believe that children do best when there are clear expectations and boundaries. I think it's also important for children to feel like they have some semblance of control over their lives, which is why I always provide the children in my care with reasonable options within my structured guidelines.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A NANNY OR WHILE WORKING WITH A FAMILY?

Still working on this!

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES & INTERESTS?

I am a collage artist and I spend most of my spare time when I'm not working, making cut and paste paper collage art.

WHAT MAKES YOU SPARKLE?

Laughing with kids and teaching and learning together. Having that special connection and getting to where the child loves and trusts me implicitly makes me sparkle.
