GENUINE NANNY: MILU R.

Full-time - San Francisco

MEET OUR CALM, SILLY & LOVING GENUINE NANNY MILU!

As a nanny and personal/family assistant with over 17 years of experience in the field, I am very familiar with the reality of working intimately with a family in their home and in the community. I have found that establishing rapport based on trust, clear communication and a good attitude are pillars to creating a positive working environment. I aim to understand and implement the parenting style of the parents while still maintaining my own approach in regards to how I interact with children. I have a natural talent for communication and working with children, which are skills that I have refined with each professional experience. I genuinely love children and youth and always work towards building their self-esteem, confidence, sense of responsibility and curiosity for the world around them. Being a nanny is a very important responsibility that I take seriously, but I still manage to have great fun and lots of laughter with my nanny children. I also value my ability to communicate clearly and concisely with the people around me, I pride myself on my ability to express what and how I feel and think. My friends know who to ask when they want an honest answer :)

I am a native San Franciscan, born and raised in The Mission District, currently I reside in Glen Park. I take great pride in my City and am very grateful to be able to be an active member of a very vibrant community. I take full advantage of what our City has to offer, both in my personal life as well as a nanny. I truly love explore San Francisco with children whether it be taking "baby hikes" as I like to call them, for example, treading up Strawberry Hill, or enjoying an outdoor concert at Yerba Buena Gardens or meeting up with cool, artistic friends of mine of all colors at The DeYoung; I like to make my days interesting while enriching children's mind and filling them with wonder. I also am authoritative as to be able to take care of all of the daily logistics such as getting from activity to activity, doing baths and dinner, as well as redirecting behavior when the moment calls for it.

I have a passion for foreign languages and innate pedagogical skills in teaching language via immersion. I double majored in Psychology and French and completed a Master's of French Language and Literature at San Francisco State University. I am passionate about languages and have been a key factor in assisting two different family's children to become fluent in a secondary language, one French and the other Spanish. I would love to discuss more about this in-person.

I am seeking a long-term, part-time or full-time position in San Francisco, in which I can give excellent care to children, reliable family assisting and to continue to grow in my vocation as a nanny.

MY BELIEFS AS A GENUINE NANNY

I believe...All children are beautiful souls that only need care, love and guidance to develop their unique talents.

I believe...My nanny children's emotional, psychological and physical safety come first.

I believe...I am like a loving and fun big sister who also knows how to maintain safe boundaries all while having moments of incredible fun, joy and magic!

PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY, STRENGTHS,
WORK ETHIC, AND VALUES:

I am an outgoing and friendly individual, but I also really appreciate solitude, silence and calmness. I am conversational and seem to connect fairly easily with people from different walks of life and of all ages; and am very open-minded and accepting of people. I am introspective, sensitive, spiritual, loving, playful and firm. I value eco-friendly practices, honesty, integrity, laughter, compassion and personal growth. I am constantly on a journey of self-improvement and truly want to hone my skills as to help change this world around in my own little way. As an employee, I am organized and efficient, and very independent. I am very clean and hygienic which is very important when working with children and in a kitchen. I am also very flexible and reliable. I tend towards having a warm disposition, but at times I become more introverted in true Cancerian form.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE A NANNY?

Being a nanny is a vocation. I am a nanny because I am good at it, it comes easy to me and it's a wonderful and privileged position to have. Working with children in any capacity is a calling and it became very clear to me many years ago that I have an innate talent for it. I genuinely love children and love to see them thriving and happy in their little worlds.

I love being a nanny because it is a low-pressure job in the sense that the tasks are generally easy, but yet I find so much joy in basking in the light of children's innocence and cuteness. I love being a nanny in San Francisco specifically because I get to enjoy and share the City that I love with my little friends. I have also found that nannying is deeply spiritual as children are the closest entities to God and the sacredness of that is not lost on me.

The key ingredient for working with children is to show them that you love them and that you care about who they are as individuals. I seek to empower children by listening to their opinions and suggestions as to build their confidence and self-esteem. I view children as my equals and truly value what they have to offer as I guide them in their growth. This is applicable to children of all ages, one can even listen to infants if one is sensitive to their language.

WHAT IS YOUR COMMUNICATION STYLE WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR EMPLOYERS? ANY EXAMPLES TO SHARE?

I tend to maintain a friendly relationship with the families in which each party can and should communicate their needs as to maintain a harmonious working relationship and very positive atmosphere. I appreciate open and respectful communication. I like to joke and laugh a lot and I believe that should also exist in professional relationships. I also have many years of experience of nannying with the parents working from home so I am accustomed to having regular contact throughout the day with the parents.

WHAT TYPE OF NANNY ROLE ARE YOU LOOKING FOR AND WHAT ENVIRONMENT YOU WOULD BE MOST SUCCESSFUL IN

I would like to find a family who I can work with for 1-2 years, perhaps more if there is a need and it is the right fit. I feel happiest in a position when I have a certain amount of freedom in choosing our City adventures, this is more applicable to younger children as older children often have school and extracurricular activities. I really enjoy when the house is fairly organized and of course I always do my part to help out. I like it when parents have a high standard for their children's behavior (ex. listening to instructions, being kind, etc.). It is not pleasurable to work with very misbehaved children (a certain amount of naughtiness is to be expected). I do not keep those positions as it is often a reflection of the parenting style. It's nice to work in neighborhoods that are central and walkable, but I also love driving the kids to far-off corners of the City for adventures. Although I often help out with the household tasks, especially with the children's belongings and spaces, I am primarily a nanny so the family should have a housekeeper :)

PLEASE DESCRIBE HOW YOU HAVE TAKEN INITIATIVE AS A NANNY OR WHILE WORKING WITH A FAMILY?

In my last nanny position I took care of a set of twin boys starting when they were one-month old until they were three-and-a-half years old. When I was offered the position, I stated to the parents that my main goal aside from their children's well-being was that they would be fluent in Spanish, which was a great challenge as the parents do not speak Spanish. I spoke to my boys in Spanish about 75-80% of the time as well as read to them in Spanish, played songs in Spanish, hung out with my Spanish speaking friends and family and exposed them to the Latino community in San Francisco - by the time I left the boys were fluent for their age. The parents decided to put them in a Spanish immersion program for preschool and today they are completely fluent in Spanish; recently at fluent level to enter into a Public Spanish Immersion School program. I am still very much a part of their lives and babysit them regularly, we speak in Spanish and I am in awe and so proud of them and myself that we accomplished biligualism!

WHAT ARE YOUR DISCIPLINE PHILOSOPHY AND CHILD-REARING VALUES?

I have an authoritative view on discipline in which I allow the child to express him or herself and take their opinion into consideration but I still maintain a controlled environment. What I find to be key is to be consistent with behavioral expectations and discipline as need be. I prefer to be able to talk through situations so that the child understands and has the opportunity to decide on his/her own to behave. Otherwise, I can be firm and command respect from children when need be. For infant children it is best to just distract the child from the unwanted behavior (ex. replace electrical wire with an appropriate toy), but once the child is old enough and understands I use both positive and negative reinforcement (ex. getting an ice cream later or taking away a privilege/object). I have found with older children it is sometimes necessary to take on a strict/firm intonation, children often test their boundaries and sometimes the adult just has to be the boss. I appreciate working with families who are not afraid of being strict and maintaining an expectation for the child(s) behavior.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A NANNY OR WHILE WORKING WITH A FAMILY?

My biggest challenge thus far in my career as a nanny has been to learn how to cook and maintain a kitchen for and entire family. In one of my positions, I was responsible for grocery shopping and cooking all of the meals for the family. I had to learn to cook gluten-free, dairy-free and healthy meals. It was quite daunting in the beginning as I had only really cooked for myself, but I grew to become very comfortable in the kitchen and learned how to make tasty and healthy meals.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES & INTERESTS?

During my free time I practice loads of yoga (mainly Bikram), take dance classes, go out dancing with my friends, working on my fanny pack business, roller skating, going to shows, reading about spirituality and self-improvement, self-care, getting out into nature when possible, car camping, fantasizing about which country I will live in next, fantasizing about my next haircut and currently re-thinking my wardrobe.

WHAT MAKES YOU SPARKLE?

I believe I sparkle because I am authentic - I wear my heart on my sleeve! I have always been able to grow from all of my different life experiences both good and bad, the older I get the more love I feel in my heart! I also have the heart of an artist and see so much beauty all around me as well as having the capacity to hold space and bear witness to my personal as well as our collective shadow.
