MY BELIEFS AS A GENUINE NANNY

I believe... Child initiated play is the best learning tool

I believe... In showing up for children where they are, not where we want them to be

I believe... Children learn from our behavior. It is not just about what we say, but what we do!

PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY, STRENGTHS,
WORK ETHIC, AND VALUES:

Bubbly, outgoing with a great sense of humor. I am personable, easy to talk to and a good listener. I have an innate ability to understand and read people, and have always been fascinated with human behavior and psychology. I pride myself on my communication skills and willingness to go deep with people in order to create meaningful relationships. I had my first retail job at fourteen and have built up my strong work ethic since then. I am not someone who is able to give less than one hundred percent at anything I do. I believe whole heartedly in the influence we have on young children, shaping them into the people they will become, and I do not take that responsibility lightly.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE A NANNY?

After graduating high school I worked in the fashion industry for four years, living in both Paris and New York. After my time in New York I realized that the industry was not for me. It was when I returned home and started nannying that I was inspired to pursue a career working with young children. For the first time in my life I became a voracious learner, completely confident that I was on the correct path. I am the most joyful and at peace when I am working with children and my experiences continue to confirm that this is what I am meant to do.

WHAT IS YOUR COMMUNICATION STYLE WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR EMPLOYERS? ANY EXAMPLES TO SHARE?

Clear and consistent communication is crucial for the success of any relationship. I like to know the expectations my employer has for me at the start of every week, and if possible, each day. I love being in the moment with children, but understand that parents often appreciate updates and check ins throughout the day, which I am happy to provide. Children can often be curious about topics that parents prefer to be communicated in a specific way based on their families values, I often differ to parents when such topics arise. Having a conversation about a families values can be very beneficial for me as a care giver when maneuvering these tricky situations. There have been many times where I have had to express to the child that I need to think about my answer to a certain question. This gives me time to consult with the parents, making sure I always return to the subject at a later point.

WHAT TYPE OF NANNY ROLE ARE YOU LOOKING FOR AND WHAT ENVIRONMENT YOU WOULD BE MOST SUCCESSFUL IN

I am most interested in working with a family with young children. There is magic in every age, but my favorite age to work with is one and half to five years. I would love to work with a family who shares, or at least values, my teaching philosophy, specifically surrounding play. I believe I could be successful in most environments, as I am quite adaptable, but I thrive with open and clear communication.

PLEASE DESCRIBE HOW YOU HAVE TAKEN INITIATIVE AS A NANNY OR WHILE WORKING WITH A FAMILY?

I enjoy taking initiative in planning experiences and activities for the children. I ran a messy art summer program for the preschool where I was employed, where I created different sensory experiences and process focused art activities for the children who ranged from one to five years old.

WHAT ARE YOUR DISCIPLINE PHILOSOPHY AND CHILD-REARING VALUES?

I do not believe in traditional discipline, punishments do not improve bad behavior. Traditional methods of discipline do not allow for the grace we need to give children when making mistakes, instead we can build their skills around managing powerful feelings. Traditional methods of discipline also do not allow for expression of emotions but rather, shame. Learning the skills to manage emotions in a healthy way is a life long journey and an extremely valuable tool for children to begin learning. I believe the adults in a child's life need to have clear and strong boundaries. I believe in expressing those boundaries in a firm and consistent manner. The number one job of a care giver is to keep the child safe, which includes being a safe person for them to come to no matter what.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A NANNY OR WHILE WORKING WITH A FAMILY?

After working with one family at different capacities on and off for ten years we have become extremely close. The most challenging thing for me has been setting firm boundaries around my personal time. I have realized that I function best when I have had sufficient time to myself. Too often in the past I have let my work life bleed into my personal life, as they have often felt one in the same. I have worked on firmer boundaries, shutting off my phone and my brain, building up this muscle, which has helped create a homeostasis.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES & INTERESTS?

I love making art and exploring different mediums. I have tried out polymer clay, collage, and most recently I have been drawing and painting on vintage clothing. I have played soccer since I was four, and have continued into my adult life, playing in coed leagues in every city I have lived, even Paris! My family is extremely important to me, I have a younger sister and older brother, who I adore spending time with.

WHAT MAKES YOU SPARKLE?

I have always grown up with a huge extended family, with twelve first cousins and somewhere around eighty second cousins. As my cousins have had children of their own, I have had the joy of spending time with all of them. Whenever we are all together I am constantly gravitating towards the little ones, and I have been told by each of my family members that I seem to truly come alive when I am interacting with them. This just further validates the internal sparkle I feel and the immediate smile that appears on my face whenever kids are around. They remind me of the magic and beauty of life which is too easy to forget when facing the adult world.
